What will catch the consumer's eye? Is the product's features obvious at a glance? What will make it sell better? Should you use a model or show it in use? Is it irresistible on its own?
This collapsible silicone colander is colorful enough on its own. Adding some cooked pasta gave it a "yum factor". Plus, showing it both fully expanded and in collapsed form helps to demonstrate the full benefit of the product, that it takes up very little space when storing it away.
Including a mouth-watering inset with the grilled chops alongside the main photo not only explains this product's use, but makes it irresistible and a must-buy for the grill.
Some items just aren't self explanatory at first glance. In-use shots can really clear up a lot of questions instantly, including why the product is important and how it's used. You can even demonstrate several of the item's top benefits and features, visually.
Challenges for props or accents are plentiful on the set. But thinking outside the box can bring some surprising and amazing results. Here are a few examples of my "creative" problem solving.
Challenge: Bubbles would make the prefect accent for this sponge but soap was too translucent and delicate to withstand the harsh lights.
Solution: I quickly whisked some egg whites into stiff peaks and spooned them in place. They appeared whiter under the lights and their stiffer consistency held the shape perfectly.
Solution: I grabbed some instant brown rice from my bag which I brought for lunch that day and smashed it with the heal of my shoe. Harsh treatment, yes, but with the most satisfactory results.
- Make sure your photos are clean, crisp, properly lit and represent your product well
- Use props to entice the consumer's senses and prompt them to buy, buy, buy
- Demonstrate how less obvious items are used and why they are important to own
- Think outside the box with props—create it if you don't have it
